Igbo Traditional Marriage Ceremony

Igba nkwu nwanyi // English: Bride's Wine Carrying

History: Traditionally, the groom must travel to Nigeria and perform this rite at the bride's family home in the presence of her extended family, as well as his own immediate family and friends.

Before the igba nkwu ceremony, the groom is required to visit the bride’s parents’ house with his parents + any siblings to introduce his marriage intention and ask for their consent.

How It Happens: The bride publicly points out the man she wants to marry. The bride's father then prays traditionally for the bride, blessing her marriage and future. He then gives her a gourd-cup of palm wine to go identify the man she intends to share her life with.

The bride and her bridesmaids begin to seek out her groom who is hidden in the crowd. Along the way, male guests and the groom's friends + groomsmen try to persuade her give them the wine.

Once the groom has been found, she kneels and offers him the drink in her hand. If he takes it, this tells the crowd that he is her husband. He then drinks all of the wine to demonstrate the fullness of his acceptance.

Now, they are officially man and wife.

Next, the couple dance together to meet her parents who proclaim blessings over them.

Then, everyone parties!
